Your problem is that your fast-thinking and highly developed brain protects you from the opportunities that can fundamentally change your life.

Not because you are not capable or ambitious, but because you unconsciously choose what feels safe over what feels strategically right.

I definitely recognize it in myself as well, and now I see this in women who on paper have built everything that defines ‘success. Well educated, intelligent and social, years of experience, a strong network and the proven results. And yet they no longer feel that inside. Because no matter how successful it looks from the outside, you yourself have felt for ages that there is more to it. Not just business success, but personal and financial return on who you have truly become.

And yet you keep moving within the same bandwidth. Not because you could not move forward, but because you only look at what you can see, what you ‘have’ now and how you have it all organized flawlessly now, business and personal. Now you only think from what feels safe. And that is exactly where growth stops. Not because of lack of opportunity, but because of your own ‘Dike of Equality’ and therefore cannot see the other perspectives and do not (yet) have the guts to let go of your safety and security to actually do things differently. This is a fundamentally different problem than not having opportunities.

Letting go and not knowing what will come in return means not starting over.

Why ambitious women get stuck on opportunities that have always been there

When one of my clients tells me she is stuck in her growth, the first question I always ask is the same: what options do you see at this point? The answer is almost always predictable and are the variations of what she already knows and is doing. The next step in the business she is already in. The customers already coming to her. The offerings that logically align with what she is already doing. The environment she already has. Or all possible expansion within the same context. And yes for you, everything makes sense, everything is rational and defensible. And that is exactly why it is limited.

This is understandable. We are conditioned to look for precedent. What have others in my position done? What is the usual route? What fits someone with my profile?

But that question limits you the moment you ask it. Because the usual route is built for the ‘average’ person in your category, not for you specifically, not for your combination of expertise, character and ambition.

The difference between attainable opportunities and available opportunities for women in leadership

The distinction I always have my clients make is the distinction between what is reachable and what is available.

Reachable is anything that comes your way without you having to actively search for it. The vacancy that is shared in your network. The client who comes to you via-via. The collaboration that feels natural because you already move in the same circles. Reachable opportunities are visible, mostly socially validated and easily accessible. They feel safe because they are conceived for people like you.

Available is anything that exists as a possibility, even if it is not visible and even if it requires initiative, risk or a creative leap. Available opportunities don't come to you. You go get them, create them or persuade them. But the difference is that they are not imaginary. They are available because they connect directly to your expertise, your network, your reputation or your way of thinking.

Most women live exclusively in the realm of the attainable. And precisely therein lies the intelligent trap. And from my own experience, I have developed my system The Intelligence Gap™ developed to bridge this gap.

Why attainable opportunities for top women are precisely the greatest risk

The contradiction of reachable opportunities is that they feel safer while being more strategically dangerous. This is because reachable opportunities, by definition, are also reachable to anyone who looks like you. They are transparent, communicated and open. In other words, competition is greater. And in a market where everyone takes the same route, the battle is fought on price, on visibility, on volume. And then you start asking yourself, ‘Who is waiting for me...’

But you don't benefit from a fight on volume. You benefit from a position that belongs to you and top clients who are convinced of what you have to offer and the results they can achieve. Those are the available opportunities that you are going to see and seize.

Available opportunities are less competitive precisely because they are less visible. The customer you reach through an unexpected collaboration, the stage you create through an initiative that does not yet exist, the market you enter because you see what others do not yet see. These are the moves that make you remarkable and unmatchable rather than exchangeable.

Close the gap of The Intelligence Gap™ to see what is available

The core of The Intelligence Gap™ does not reveal a lack of intelligence, but lets you see a gap between what you know and can do and what you actually utilize. Women at this level have an exceptional combination of analytical ability, domain knowledge and human acuity. But that capacity is structurally deployed on optimizing the existing, rather than discovering the possible.

The Intelligence Gap™ manifests exactly here where you have become so good at navigating within known structures that you have begun to underestimate the structures outside your field of vision. And through your ‘Dyke of Equality’ simply cannot see them.

And in a changing market that is fundamentally changing in character, certainly because of Artifical Intelligence (AI) and all the technological innovations, because of globalization and because of shifting (international) power relations, that is no small shortcoming. It is the difference between growing and stagnating.

<img decoding="async" width="978" height="696" src="https://gerdihulsink.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Je-groeit-niet-te-langzaam.-Je-denkt-te-klein-voor-wat-er-werkelijk-voor-je-beschikbaar-is.-.png" alt="You are not growing too slowly. Not thinking about what your options are, but start exploring what is available for someone with your particular combination of expertise, network and position, even if it is not obvious.

This sounds abstract, but it is actually a 3-step framework:

Step 1: Map your actual assets, not your job description

Most women describe themselves in terms of their role or their industry. I'm director of healthcare. I'm a strategy consultant. I'm a leadership coach. Those labels are not wrong, but they are limiting because they imply that your value is relevant only within the framework of that category.

Your real assets are fundamentally broader. The ability to make sense of complex information quickly and translate it into clear decisions is relevant in boardrooms, in advisory processes, in public communications and in investment issues. The ability to move people, build trust and provide direction in uncertain situations is not exclusive to one sector. It is universally valuable.

Once you disconnect your assets from your current context, a landscape of available opportunities opens up that you couldn't see before.

Step 2: Find the intersections where your assets are rare rather than common

Available opportunities are always at the intersections. Where your expertise is rare in a context that doesn't normally have access to it. There where your network can make a connection that others cannot. There where your perspective makes something visible that remains invisible to others.

I see this consistently among the women who are really breaking through. They are bringing their strategic leadership to sectors that hardly know that kind of thinking. They are connecting worlds that have never been in conversation. They are taking positions that didn't exist before because no one else had seen the connection they saw.

That is not a coincidence. That is the result of consciously looking beyond the attainable.

Step 3: Move proactively rather than reactively

Reachable opportunities demand response. There's an offer, you respond. There is a job opening, you apply. There is an invitation, you accept.

Available opportunities require initiative. You approach the organization before it has created a position. You make the proposal before the customer knows they need it. You build the partnership before the other party felt it was possible.

This takes guts and courage. And it requires a level of self-confidence based not on external affirmation but on a deeply embedded awareness of your own value. This is exactly what I mean when I talk about leading from your essence rather than from your desire for proof.

Leadership and Freedom without the need for proof, purely from your essence and own value

What the distinction between reachable and available means for your positioning

There is a direct connection between this way of thinking and how you position yourself in the marketplace.

Women who operate exclusively in the attainable position themselves as an excellent (desirable) option within a known category. They are good, reliable and are a solid choice. And precisely because of that, they are interchangeable with others who are equally good, equally reliable and equally solid.

Women who learn to operate in the available position themselves differently. They are not the best option in a queue of similar options. They are the only option for the client, organization or issue that fits them exactly. That's the shift from comparable to irreplaceable. From competitive to magnetic.

And that shift doesn't start with a better website or a sharper LinkedIn profile. It starts with a willingness to look at what is available and move based on what only you can offer.

What is available to you based on who you are?

This is the question I want to leave you with. Not as a rhetorical exercise, but as a serious strategic analysis. Look at your expertise, your network, your personal brand (not pure reputation) and your way of thinking. Look at the problems in your environment that no one is solving the right way. Look at the connections you can make that others don't see. Look at the positions that don't yet exist but are needed.

That is your available landscape beyond the beaten path and beyond the boundaries from which you now live and work. It is bigger than you think. It is more valuable than the attainable options before you. And it requires something that cannot be bought but can be developed, which is the willingness to move before the path is clear. Start before you are ready.

Your business and your life never grow beyond the level of what you dare to see as possibility for yourself. Your ‘Dike of Equality’ is bridgeable just like The Intelligence Gap™.

Four questions to sharpen your available opportunities

Herewith some questions to move you beyond the attainable.

What problems in my environment could I solve in a way that others cannot, including outside my current sector or role?

What connections can I make that are impossible for others, based on who I know and what I understand?

What position or proposition does not yet exist but clearly has value and would align with who I am?

What step have I put off for myself for ages because it takes courage, when I know deep down that it is strategically the right one?

These are not easy questions.
