Not as people, but in terms of the questions they ask and the problems they bring to me. I’ve solved them so many times that they no longer keep me up at night, and I can feel that while I’m working. I still deliver quality work and can certainly help them further, but the sense of fulfillment is gone.’

I recognized it immediately. Not as dissatisfaction, but as a signal I’d been sensing for a long time, yet didn’t dare voice—let alone acknowledge. Because that signal made it clear to me that my expertise and my position had drifted apart, and that I was expected to make a choice. Because this was coming at the expense of my own successes, growth, fulfillment, and ultimately, my energy.

Not burnout, but bore-out.

Feeling undervalued and drained of energy because you’re no longer the right person in the right place.

This is a common challenge I see among women who have already come a long way. They’ve learned, continued to learn, and built a successful career, adapting and adjusting along the way. But now they’ve reached a point where the people they work with, the assignments they’re given, and the level at which they’re expected to perform no longer provide the challenge and fulfillment they seek. In fact, their current position has fallen behind who they’ve become. They’re still on the stage they were on three years ago, even though they’ve long since moved on to a different level.

Why Expertise and Position So Easily Drift Apart

Expertise grows naturally when you do good work and are willing to learn. Every assignment you take on adds value. Every problem you solve deepens your understanding. Every conversation you have sharpens your insight and strategic ability. All of this is expertise that you build up over time. It’s the result of years of investing your time, energy, and attention—and your willingness to keep growing.

A position doesn’t develop on its own; it’s the accumulation of all your value, experiences, and expertise. A remarkable position requires a deliberate choice of strategy. It’s the conscious decision to make yourself available for a specific level, a specific type of challenge, and a specific type of person, company, market, or industry—and nothing else. After all, positioning is about attracting—as well as repelling—those who aren’t your top clients. Most women don’t actively make that choice. They drift from one thing to another, take whatever comes their way, remain loyal to existing clients even when those clients no longer challenge them, and avoid confronting the question of whether their current position still aligns with who they have become.

And this is where they’re leaving value and potential on the table—on a personal, professional, and financial level. Because the result is a gap that’s slowly widening. The gap between the women they are and the positions they hold. Between the level at which they think and the level at which they are expected to perform. Between the fulfillment they seek and the assignments they accept. Between the price they (dare to) charge and the actual value they add.

That gap is invisible, because from the outside, everything seems fine, right? Your schedule is full. Your reputation and income are stable. But inside, a quiet dissatisfaction is growing that’s hard to put into words, precisely because there’s nothing objectively wrong.

The Cost of Holding onto a Position That No Longer Fits

I’ve experienced this firsthand in my own career. After 20 years of corporate experience—with its many business units, boardrooms, reorganizations, international strategy, and political complexities—I had outgrown my own position long before I was ready to admit it. I continued to devote time to work that used to bring me fulfillment but now felt like a burden—it no longer challenged me and, in fact, left me exhausted. It drained me, and yet I stayed put and kept doing what I did in ways that made sense three years ago but had now become too narrow. My drive and energy waned; I gave others the spotlight while I waited for the right moment to take a bigger role. Which, of course, never came.

A different position doesn't just happen on its own. That's the hard truth I tell my clients.

The costs of a role that no longer fits are less obvious than a bad month or a lost project. They’re insidious; they’re embedded in the energy you pour into work that no longer resonates with you. They’re in the conversations you have with people who are looking for a version of you that’s different from the one you actually are. In the opportunities you miss because the people who support you don’t recognize you in the role you currently hold. And in the fulfillment and freedom you’re missing out on—not because you’re not good enough, but because you’re holding yourself back from being your full self.

The Difference Between Building Expertise and Taking a Stand

Expertise is what you know and can do; it is the substance of your professional skill that you have built up through years of experience, learning, and practice. Position is the place you occupy based on that expertise—the choice of who you make yourself available to, which issues you claim as your own, and how you position yourself relative to others in your field. Expertise without position leads to broad availability and invisible authority. The combination of your experience, energy, value, and expertise is what attracts top clients and builds lasting value.

Waiting for better times? Then you won't make it in a competitive, ever-changing market.

And yet you keep waiting for the right moment, for more certainty, for proof that the new position will work before you let go of the old one. That hesitation isn’t modesty, and it’s certainly not a profitable strategy. It’s the fear that comes with every fundamental change in life’s stages. The fear that the new role won’t be recognized, won’t be in demand, and won’t generate the income that your current role—however unsatisfying it may be—still provides.

I understand that fear. I've felt it myself, but I've also seen what happens when women take that step, embrace change, and persevere when things get tough.

When do you know you're ready for the next phase as an entrepreneur or leader?

If your satisfaction with your current job is declining while the quality of your work remains the same, you’ve outgrown your position. If you notice that you don’t need to be the best version of yourself to deliver what your clients ask for, that’s the sign. Being ready for the next level has nothing to do with external validation or a guarantee that it will work out. It’s about the honest realization that you can contribute more than your current position requires. That realization is the starting point—the moment when you have a choice to make: Which position aligns with who you’ve become, and what does it take to actually take on that position?

Take a stance that reflects who you've become

Repositioning isn’t a communication issue. It’s not a matter of writing a new bio, choosing a different photo, or crafting a more compelling LinkedIn summary. It starts much earlier and goes much deeper. Many people start tinkering with their marketing and presentation.

But it starts with the question of which issue you claim as your own—the one you want to be known for. Not the issue you can solve, because as a multifaceted person, there are probably dozens of those. But the issue on which you have a perspective that can come from nowhere else but you. The issue that you understand from the inside out, because you’ve lived through it, thought it through, and worked through it yourself.

That perspective is your position. And you then translate that position into your top clients—the people you want to be available for—the way you present yourself, the price you charge, the projects you accept, and the projects you turn down. All those choices together form a framework that communicates who you are and who you’re here for.

In my strategic partnership, I work through The Integral Growth Systems™ where repositioning is always reinforced by three dimensions simultaneously. Personal: Who have you become, and what do you want to stand for?. Business: What role, systems, and structure are appropriate for this?. Financial: what capabilities, pricing, and scalability are appropriate for that level. Addressing these three dimensions separately leads to a position that sounds good but doesn’t feel right, or feels right but doesn’t pay off. Together, they form the architecture of a new phase: a strong foundation rooted in your essence, where you devote your time and energy to the matters and people that truly matter—and where you will make and leave your mark.

How do you turn years of experience into a position that attracts the right people?

By stopping to offer experience in terms of hours and starting to position a specific perspective as your unique value proposition. For example, my twenty years of experience in corporate business—that’s a foundation; it’s not the position itself. Your position emerges when you become the clearest, most valuable leader on a specific issue that’s urgent for your ideal client. That requires eliminating everything that dilutes your position: broad availability, generic offerings, and the fear of excluding people. What remains is a position that’s distinct enough to be recognized by exactly the people for whom you can make the biggest difference.

Positioning means attracting your top customers and weeding out those you’re not there for.

Four Questions Worth Asking

Which projects or clients still really energize you, and what do they have in common that your current clients don't?

If you were to describe your position based on who you are right now, rather than on what you’ve done, how would that sound?

Why do you hold yourself back when you know that’s not who you are, and what’s the real reason you do that?

Who are you giving the stage that’s actually meant for you, and what would change if you took it for yourself?

Do you want to know where you stand?

The Compound™ Growth Scan shows you in ten minutes how your personal, business, and financial capital currently relate to one another and where the biggest opportunities lie that you’re currently leaving untapped.

Strategically simplified decision-making, without detours.

→ Take The Compound™ Growth Scan

The Compound Scan™ identifies areas where your value exceeds what your current position reflects, and where the greatest leverage lies for strategically compounding your personal, professional, and financial potential.

One Life.
