As their experience, responsibility, expertise, and financial clout grow, so does what it takes to continue growing. Whereas an earlier phase primarily calls for knowledge, discipline, strategy, and the ability to execute, the next phase requires something that is much less often consciously designed: an environment that brings your thinking up to the same level as the challenges for which you are now responsible.

That may sound less spectacular than a new strategy, a new business model, or a new positioning, but that is precisely where an important blind spot lies.

After all, most successful women are already surrounded by people. They have a professional network, clients, former colleagues, entrepreneurs, friends, business contacts, and people who value their expertise. They often even have access to impressive networks that others can only dream of.

Still, having a large network doesn’t automatically mean you have an environment that accelerates your growth. I see this regularly on LinkedIn and hear it from them as well. These successful women are mainly surrounded by people who admire, appreciate, or validate them, while what they really need are people who challenge their thinking, highlight their blind spots, and dare to ask the questions they no longer ask themselves. There’s a fundamental difference there.

Admiration confirms where you are. A supportive environment helps you see where you can go.

And that is exactly where the value of collective intelligence begins.

Why Successful Women Often Think They Have to Do It All on Their Own

Another pattern I recognize in the most intelligent, successful women I meet. They’re used to fending for themselves. For years, they’ve learned that they can rely on themselves, that their own analysis is sharp enough, and that they get ahead by thinking harder rather than asking for more. They’ve become accustomed to independence. That’s brought them to where they are today, but it also keeps them from reaching their full potential.

Because there’s a limit to what solo thinking can achieve. Not because of a lack of intelligence, but because every thinker, no matter how sharp, is trapped within her own frame of reference. She sees what she’s used to seeing. She asks the questions she’s used to asking. She evaluates opportunities and risks based on patterns she has developed herself.

They have worked their way through complex situations, taken responsibility when others did not, solved problems that no one else could solve, and learned to make sound decisions under pressure. Precisely because this has led to their success, it makes sense that they rely on their own analysis and judgment.

That ability has become a major strength, but at a certain point, it also became a limitation. Because no matter how intelligent, experienced, or strategic you are, you continue to view things from your own frame of reference—your own ‘Dijk van Gelijk.’ You see what you recognize, you ask questions based on what you already know, you evaluate opportunities based on past experiences, and you interpret risks based on patterns that have worked for you in the past.

That is exactly why success sometimes creates a paradox. The more successful you become, the more your existing way of thinking is reinforced. And the stronger that reinforcement becomes, the harder it can be to recognize that you now need a different frame of reference.

The next phase doesn’t always require more intelligence. Sometimes it requires access to intelligence that isn’t your own. And often it requires recalibration, simplification, and design—so that you can close your own Intelligence Gap. Because the Intelligence Gap™ doesn’t just exist between what you’re capable of and what you claim to the outside world. This gap also exists between what you alone can see and what becomes visible when other sharp thinkers take a look. And that second gap is precisely the one that collective intelligence fills.

The Intelligence Gap™ also arises outside of yourself

Much of my work begins when I close The Intelligence Gap™, the gap between what you actually know, can do, and have built up, and what the market recognizes, understands, and values of that. But that gap exists on multiple levels.

An external intelligence gap exists when your expertise exceeds your market positioning, causing the market to underestimate your actual value.

A business intelligence gap exists when your knowledge, methods, and experience are still largely confined to your mind and have not been sufficiently transformed into intellectual capital that can serve as an asset for your business.

And there is a personal “Intelligence Gap” when you yourself can no longer see what you’ve come to take for granted from your own perspective.

The latter is often underestimated. After all, you can’t step outside yourself to view yourself from the outside. You can reflect, analyze, and ask questions, but ultimately, you always do so from within the system you’ve built for yourself. That’s why a single good conversation with someone who has a different frame of reference can sometimes yield more than weeks of thinking on your own. Not because that other person is necessarily smarter, but because they can see something that you, from your position, can no longer see. That’s what I call the power of collective intelligence.

From a network of contacts to an environment with collective intelligence

No longer networking focused solely on your own, individual interests, but rather achieving more together through shared intelligence.

Most networks I know operate based on individual interests. You help me, I help you. You share your contacts, I share mine. That does have value, but it’s transactional. And what I’ve found is that those transactional relationships stop at the point where each person’s needs are met.

A strategic environment fundamentally changes the function of a network. People don’t come together there just because they like each other, share similar interests, or see business opportunities arising from the connection. They come together because the quality of thinking in that environment improves when different experiences, perspectives, and forms of expertise are brought together.

A network can give you access to someone. A supportive environment can help you make better decisions.

A network can help you get an introduction. A supportive environment can show you that you need to look for another opportunity in the first place.

A network can reinforce what you’re already doing. A supportive environment can challenge you to explore whether what you’re doing still aligns with what you now want to build.

That is why I view a strategic environment as relational capital—not as a collection of contacts, but as a form of capital that grows as the quality of the connections, the conversations, and the collective intelligence increases.

Collective intelligence is at its strongest and most valuable when a group of people with complementary experiences, perspectives, and expertise comes together around the same central questions: How do we build a life and a business that create freedom, wealth, and impact on the scale that suits us? What do we know collectively that we don’t see individually?

That is the shift from individual interests to shared intelligence. And that shift changes what is possible—not because individual women are becoming smarter, but because the system of thought they form together is sharper than any of them individually.

That's exactly How Integral Growth Systems™ works at the group level. Personal capital, business capital, and financial capital don’t just grow when you develop them holistically. They also grow when the environment around you reinforces, challenges, and deepens that holistic way of thinking.

Why Admiration Isn't the Same as Growth

One of the biggest misconceptions about successful women is that they primarily need more support. Of course, support is important, but support without challenge can ultimately be just as limiting as criticism without trust. This was a real eye-opener for me that set a lot of things in motion.

Because when people mainly admire you, it’s easy for an environment to develop in which your existing identity is affirmed. You’re the successful entrepreneur, the experienced leader, the woman who always knows what she’s doing, and the person others turn to for advice. That’s nice—after all, we enjoy giving and helping others. But there’s also a downside, because it can also mean:

No one asks you why you still do so much on your own.

No one asks you why your revenue is growing, but your net worth isn't keeping pace.

No one asks you why your reputation has grown beyond your current standing.

No one asks you why you're still making decisions based on an old version of yourself.

No one asks you whether the company you're running today is actually still the company you want to own five years from now.

And no one is asking you what might be the most important question: ’’What would you build if you no longer had to prove that you could do it on your own?"

Those are the questions you don’t necessarily need to hear from people who admire you. Those are the questions you need to hear from people who understand you and dare to challenge you.

The environment you're in helps determine what you consider possible

When you’re constantly surrounded by people who define growth as more revenue, more customers, more employees, and more visibility, that gradually becomes the standard by which you measure your own success. Then ‘more’ feels like progress. But maybe ‘more’ isn’t the right measure for your next phase at all.

Perhaps you want less operational dependence, but more ownership and strategic leadership.

You might want to work fewer hours but have greater strategic influence.

Maybe you don't want more customers, but rather a smaller number of customers at a much higher level.

Perhaps you no longer want to generate income solely from your expertise, but rather build intellectual, business, and financial capital that continues to create value even without your constant presence.

That calls for a different environment. Because when the women around you view success differently, the questions you ask yourself change as well. Then the question isn’t just what you can still achieve—it’s what you want to have.

It's not just how much you can earn, but how much of that actually becomes wealth.

It's not just about how big your business can become, but how much freedom that business actually gives you.

It's not just about the reputation you've built, but how that reputation can serve as capital for your next phase.

This gives rise to fundamentally different conversations—conversations rooted in the essence, with depth and enrichment, and a strong sense of connection within the collective.

That's why The Compound™ Board exists

This is exactly the idea behind The Compound™ Board. I didn’t feel the need to create yet another networking group for successful women—there are already plenty of those. And I also didn’t want to build a traditional mastermind group where women primarily exchange knowledge, experiences, and contacts.

I started with ELLLE, where the basic idea is the same. But I realized I wasn’t building the right thing. It wasn’t quite right YET. The Compound™ Board is a redesign based on a different premise: that women who have already achieved a great deal need an environment where they can explore their most important strategic issues with women who understand what’s really at stake at that level. These are experienced business leaders, established entrepreneurs, executives, and founders who aren’t looking for yet more information to add to their knowledge, but rather for an environment that deepens their thinking and sharpens their decision-making.

The discussions therefore focus on the issues that arise once you’ve already achieved success and the next phase is no longer solely about growth. They address positioning when your expertise has outgrown your current market position. They address reputation capital and the question of how to convert a well-established reputation into strategic access to funding and investors—or, in other words, ensuring you’re “future-fit” for an exit strategy. They take a comprehensive look at personal, business, and financial capital and the question of how to ensure that income can actually be transformed into wealth and a legacy.

The Compound™

On leadership, ownership, freedom, and legacy—when you no longer want to build only what works today, but rather what will still hold value years from now.

Here, you experience the depth of the connections that enrich your thinking, shed light on your blind spots, and make your decisions sharper than you could have made them on your own. That is relational capital that compounds. Because every interaction adds something to the system, rather than being a transaction that ends once the immediate interest has been served.

The women on The Compound Board are consciously building that relational capital as part of the integrated system described by The Compound™. Personal, business, financial, and relational capital that reinforce one another and, together, compound toward the freedom and wealth that align with their ambitions.

One sharp question can bring about more change than twenty hours of analysis.

A single strategic launch can yield more results than months of visibility.

One person who points out your blind spot at the right moment can prevent you from making a decision that will cost you years of time, energy, and money later on.

That’s why investing in your environment isn’t a luxury. It’s an investment in the quality of your decisions. And the quality of your decisions ultimately determines the quality of the wealth you build. That’s why I believe the most strategic investment you can make at this level isn’t necessarily in a new offering. It may lie in the people you think with. In the questions they ask you. In the perspectives they bring to the table. In the standards they set as the norm.

And in an environment that not only helps you move forward, but helps you move forward in a way that truly suits the woman you're becoming.

Your next level may not require more knowledge, but rather a different frame of reference

Perhaps that is, in the end, the question this Empowered Letter should leave you with.

Not: What strategy do I need?

But: Who are the people around me when I make my most important decisions?

Because if you’re always the most experienced person in the room, you’ll likely get a lot of confirmation of what you already know, but you might not have enough access to what you can’t yet see. And that’s exactly where your greatest leverage might lie. You don’t necessarily need to know more people. You may need an environment where you have to explain less and can explore more.

An environment where your success is not in question, but where it is acceptable to question whether the way you achieved that success still aligns with your next phase.

An environment in which women do not belittle one another out of insecurity, nor do they elevate one another through superficial admiration, but rather inspire one another through experience, intelligence, and honest reflection.

Because ultimately, The Compound™ isn't just about what you can build for yourself personally, professionally, and financially. It's also about the systems and relationships that ensure that value continues to grow.

Three questions worth asking

In what kind of environment are your decisions, your blind spots, and your next steps currently being challenged by people who understand your level of ambition, responsibility, and complexity—and what would change if that environment became a structural part of your strategic decision-making?

What issues have you been grappling with on your own for quite some time—issues that, when viewed through the lens of like-minded people, might take on a new perspective that you can no longer recognize from your own vantage point?

How much of your relational capital is currently transactional—based on mutual interests—and how much consists of an environment in which the quality of your thinking, your decisions, and ultimately your personal, professional, and financial capabilities are systematically strengthened?

Do you want to know where your greatest strategic leverage lies?

The Compound™ GrowthScan In ten minutes, it shows you how your personal, business, and financial capital currently relate to one another and where the greatest leverage lies to help your accumulated value work together more effectively.

The scan isn’t just another list of things you need to do.
