Nor do I mean the life that looks successful from the outside, or the life you once mapped out for yourself because it seemed like the right choice at the time. I mean the life that fits the woman you’ve become today, what you’ve built for yourself so far, and the stage of life you’re in right now.

Because you’ve probably accomplished a lot in recent years. You’ve built, worked, led, cared for others, taken on new ventures, and shouldered responsibility. You’ve made choices that brought you to where you are today, and along the way, you’ve likely learned to keep going, especially when things got complicated. That success isn’t the problem.

The question is whether the way you built that success is still the way you want to live your life.

Perhaps you long for more freedom, depth, and space—for time to rediscover, travel, create, or simply be more present in your own life. Or maybe you actually want to take on more, but no longer in a way that constantly drains your time and energy. Perhaps you want to be in a stronger financial position, so your choices aren’t constantly dependent on this month’s revenue. Perhaps you don’t want to become less ambitious at all, but rather more ambitious about what your life can be.

This doesn’t mean you have to work harder or do more. Nor is the first question what you need to change. It starts with a conscious reset—a period to step back and gain insight into how much of your current life is still shaped by patterns that were once necessary to build the life you have now. What you want to stop, what you want to change, what you need to do, and where you want to spend your time, energy, and money in order to be successful in freedom—with challenge, fulfillment, and meaning.

Why does the pattern that made you successful sometimes hold you back in the next phase?

You’ve probably learned that you can go far by taking responsibility, working hard, and not giving up too quickly. You may have taught yourself to identify problems early on, find solutions on your own, and, above all, not rely on others.

That pattern has worked. It has brought you to where you are now. Until you realize that it no longer works, that you’re making too many concessions, and that you’re drifting further and further away from yourself.

Because what was once a strength can become a limitation in the next phase of life if you keep relying on it without reexamining what purpose it actually serves anymore. When you’re always the one who takes responsibility, letting go becomes more difficult. When you’re used to solving problems on your own, receiving becomes something you find harder to allow. When you’ve rewarded yourself for years for your achievements, having space can suddenly feel like something you have to earn first. And when you’ve built your success by shouldering more and more, carrying less can almost feel like you’re taking a step backward.

That is one of the most underrated paradoxes of success.

The system that has made you successful is not necessarily the one that will set you free.

That's also why, in my work, I talk about the Intelligence Gap™. Not because successful women lack intelligence, knowledge, experience, or ambition. Often, the opposite is true. The gap arises when the value, intelligence, and experience you’ve built up are no longer fully reflected in the position, income, wealth, influence, and freedom that could go along with them.

You haven't become too small.

In fact, you have become more than the system in which you still operate.

And that's exactly where the next phase begins.

What does your next phase really require of you?

The next phase doesn't begin automatically just because you've achieved even more. It begins when you decide that you no longer want to simply optimize what you've built, but want to redefine the purpose of it all.

That calls for a different question than ‘’How can I get even more out of my life, career, or business?" The key question is ‘What kind of life do I actually want to make possible with everything I’ve built up so far?’

That difference may seem small, but it changes the entire strategy.

Over the past few months, I have been writing in this Empowered Letters I’ve written about capital in various forms. About intellectual capital that exists in your mind but isn’t yet working effectively for you. About reputational capital that you’ve built up through years of experience but may not yet be fully leveraging. About business capital that can continue to create value even when your business is no longer entirely dependent on your daily presence. And about financial capital that can create freedom of choice outside your business, thereby reducing the dependence between work and income. But none of these forms of capital is the ultimate goal.

Capital is a means. Freedom is the space that arises when you’ve put that means to good use. And the life you can lead with it is what ultimately matters.

That's why I don't view personal growth, business growth, and financial growth as separate areas. They constantly influence one another:

Your health determines how much energy you can put into things.

Your energy influences how you lead and do business.

Your business determines how much of your time and attention it requires.

Your financial structure determines how much freedom you have to make different choices when you decide to do something else.

Your reputation determines what new doors will open for you.

Your network and environment help determine which opportunities you see and which ones you can actually pursue.

When you optimize those elements separately, you can become very successful yet find yourself with less and less freedom. That’s what today’s leadership programs contribute to.

I see it differently, because when you design them as a single system, something different emerges. That's what I Integral Growth Systems™ name: an integrated approach to growth in which personal, professional, and financial capabilities reinforce one another rather than compete with one another.

How do you create a life of freedom without giving up your ambitions?

To me, freedom doesn't mean wanting less, doing less, or having to give up your ambitions. On the contrary, freedom arises when you have more and more choices for what you invest your time, energy, intelligence, money, and attention.

A profitable business that consistently takes away more freedom than it gives you can be successful and yet no longer represent the right kind of success for you. An impressive position that constantly comes at the expense of your health, relationships, or personal space may look like a wonderful career on paper, yet at the same time be a poor investment in your life. And a financial situation where a lot of money comes in but little is actually being built up may give you a sense of success but not yet true freedom of choice.

That’s why I don’t believe in growth for growth’s sake; I believe in growth that gives something back: more time, more energy, and greater financial flexibility. It also means more influence, more control, more meaning, and more freedom of choice.

That is also the essence of Scale to Freedom™. To me, scaling up isn't simply about getting bigger. It means positioning your value and designing your leadership, business, and future in such a way that growth doesn't automatically lead to more complexity, more dependence, and more pressure.

Freedom, then, is not a reward that awaits you somewhere at the end of the journey, nor is it based on your output. Freedom becomes a design criterion from the very beginning. And that sometimes calls for a fundamental reevaluation of what you consider success.

Maybe you need to restructure your business. Maybe you need to define your position more clearly. Maybe you need to stop doing work that demands a lot from you but adds little value. Maybe you need to manage your money differently. Maybe you finally need to start using the reputation and expertise you’ve built up in a different way. Or maybe the biggest issue isn’t your business, but the fact that you’re still living according to a definition of success that no longer belongs to you.

The solution is rarely to do more. In fact, the most intelligent growth strategy is to simplify, reposition, and reallocate what already exists.

What happens when you take your own life as your starting point?

Imagine no longer building your career, business, and financial situation first and then trying to find some space for your life. Instead, turn it around. You start with the life you truly want to lead and then explore what personal, business, and financial framework is needed to make that happen. That fundamentally changes how you’re going to live your life and how you’re going to manage your work, your business, and your future.

Then you no longer ask how much revenue you need to be successful, but which business model aligns with the freedom you want to experience. You don’t just ask what position you can reach, but which position is meaningful to the woman you’ve become. You won’t just ask how much you can earn, but what portion of that will actually become wealth and thus continue to work for you. You won’t just ask what you still need to improve, but what value you’ve already built up that could be utilized, positioned, or deployed much more effectively.

To me, that's what smart investing is all about. Not constantly adding more, but Manage what you've already built up more effectively and thoughtfully. Because perhaps your greatest potential for growth doesn't lie outside yourself. Perhaps it lies hidden in value that is already present but isn't yet properly connected to the rest of your system.

Woman, live

You weren't given this life just to organize it well.

You weren't born to constantly prove how much you can handle, or to only allow yourself to enjoy life once everything is taken care of, secure, and financially sound.

Of course you have responsibilities. Of course there are people who count on you. And of course, ambition, work, and entrepreneurship don’t just disappear because you want more freedom—but somewhere amid all those responsibilities lies your life.

The life in which you want to laugh, travel, create, love, take initiative, lead, discover, learn, enjoy, give, and receive. The life in which you’re not just focused on getting everything done, but are truly present in what you make possible with everything you’ve built.

Perhaps that’s why now isn’t the time to ask yourself what you still need to accomplish. Instead, maybe this is the time to ask yourself a much more fundamental question:

If I only get one life, how do I really want to live it?

And then, don’t just formulate the answer—actually design your life, business, and financial reality around it, because you don’t have to “earn” this life first.

Woman, live.

You only get one life. So make the most of it.

Three Essential Questions to Ask Yourself

It might help if, for the time being, you don't immediately start looking for a solution, but first take an honest look at the structure of your current life.

How much of your life today is still shaped by patterns that were once necessary to build the success you have now, and which of those still truly serve you?

If you were to design your business, your position, and your financial structure entirely around the life you truly want to lead, what would need to change fundamentally?

And what excuse are you using right now to put off the freedom you long for, even though that excuse may have been necessary at one time but no longer needs to be a deciding factor?

Gain insight into your next phase. The Compound™ GrowthScan helps you gain clarity on where your personal, business, and financial capital stands today and where there is value that isn’t yet working effectively for you.
