To many expert and often highly gifted, strong women, this initially feels like a matter of quality. Especially when you’re used to the idea that good work must ultimately be noticed in order to be recognized and rewarded.

After all, you’ve invested years in this, and you possess a wealth of knowledge, experience, training, leadership skills, and results. You know what you’re capable of, and you’ve likely proven time and again that you add value. And yet, you haven’t always received the recognition and appreciation you deserve. Because often you were ahead of your time, too far ahead of the curve, coming up with visionary and forward-thinking ideas.

After all, in the business world, many competing forces are at play; the best solution isn’t automatically chosen, and the most experienced and qualified person isn’t automatically asked. Nor does the expert with the most substantive expertise automatically get the position, the budget, the assignment, or the access.

That doesn't mean that quality doesn't matter. It means that quality is just one component of the system in which value is assessed, weighed, and ultimately selected.

Anyone who understands how that system works can convey its value much more effectively.

Why can't you make it on expertise alone, but who decides and who gets chosen?

I regularly speak with women who have accumulated a vast amount of knowledge, shouldered responsibilities for years, and built a reputation of which they can rightly be proud. Yet they see that opportunities sometimes go to someone who is less competent, has less experience, or simply seems to have less to offer.

The automatic conclusion is often that the other person is more visible, a better salesperson, or better at presenting themselves. Sometimes that is indeed the case, but underlying it is often a more fundamental difference: the other person has a better understanding of how the environment in which the decision is made functions.

She understands the political and business landscape; she sees and recognizes how things work, knows who makes the formal decisions and who wields informal influence. She understands the interests behind the question, which risks are relevant to the various stakeholders, and who will ultimately have to live with the consequences of a decision. She knows what information someone needs to build trust, which objections must be addressed in advance, and who she needs to speak with before the formal discussion even takes place. This isn’t a political ploy, nor is it a matter of selling yourself better. This is what I strategic intelligence mention.

During our studies—and certainly during the early years of our careers—we often learn to excel in our field by drawing on our knowledge, taking responsibility, delivering results, and continually building our expertise. What is taught far less explicitly is how to position that expertise within a complex interplay of forces in which interests, strategic networking, investment, power and influence, access, timing, reputation, budget, and trust all influence the final decision. That’s where I see an enormous amount of value going untapped and being lost.

Knowledge alone won't get you far in a competitive market.

How does a strategic force field surrounding a business decision work?

A business decision is almost never based solely on the content of a proposal. Your conversation partner and/or contact may be the formal decision-maker, while someone else manages the budget, a third person assesses the risk, and a fourth person will ultimately have to work with your solution. A stakeholder can influence a decision without having formal decision-making authority. A past experience can carry more weight than a rational argument. The right timing and energy can also determine whether an excellent proposal is embraced or ignored. The bigger the decision, the more complex the interplay of forces usually is. And this applies to both internal matters and external relationships and companies.

Interests, power dynamics, budgets, reputation, relationships, risks, past decisions, and—especially in large corporate settings—internal politics all come into play. Not because organizations are inherently political, but because people make decisions within systems where different interests must be balanced simultaneously. That’s why a strong proposal is never just about the content. So the strategic question isn’t just what you want to achieve or what solution you’re offering, but also: Who needs to be convinced of this, who can influence the decision, what interests need to be taken into account, what objections might arise, and what relationships need to be established in advance?

If you don't ask those questions until after you've developed your proposal, it's often already too late.

Why is positioning more than just becoming visible?

Positioning is often reduced to being visible, choosing a clear niche, or presenting yourself in a distinctive way. These are components of positioning, but they aren’t the whole story. True strategic positioning is about the place your value occupies in the minds of the right people and within the system where decisions are made.

That means you need to be clear not only about what you know and can do, but also about what problem you’re solving, for whom that problem is truly urgent, what the consequences are if the problem isn’t solved, and what value your solution creates within the other person’s context.

As a result, the question changes from: ‘How can I better explain what I do?’ to: ‘’How can I ensure that my values are understood by the person for whom they are actually relevant?"

Because your customer rarely buys your expertise, and now—with all the possibilities in the field of Artificial Intelligence and the many AI tools available—that is certainly no longer the primary reason for investing in your service or product. A company, an organization, an entrepreneur, or a consumer—they don’t buy your expertise. A manager isn’t buying your expertise. They’re buying the outcome—the risk that’s eliminated, the opportunity that arises, the position that’s strengthened, or the problem that’s finally solved.. Your expertise is the source of that value. But positioning ensures that that value becomes recognizable, relevant, and appealing.

Why is your network less important than your strategic environment?

I also find the word “network” too limiting for this context. A large network says little about its strategic value. You can have thousands of contacts and still lack sufficient access to the people, information, markets, or decisions that are relevant to your next phase. What matters isn’t just who you know. It’s about the quality of the relationships around you.

Who knows your reputation and can vouch for it before you sit down at the table? Who can introduce you to a relevant decision-maker? Who understands a market where you don’t yet have a foothold? Who has information that can improve your strategic decisions? Who spots a trend before you do? Who can provide capital, knowledge, distribution, or access? Who are the strategic partners who can strengthen your position and help you move forward? And perhaps even more importantly: who dares to challenge your thinking?

That's why I prefer to talk about a strategic environment rather than yet another isolated network. A strategic environment doesn’t just expand your access to people. It expands your access to perspectives, information, opportunities, reputation, decision-making, and collective intelligence. That’s another form of capital.

Relational capital isn't about how many people you know, but how much relevant value your relationships can unlock.

How the Intelligence Gap™ Can Strengthen the Strategic Landscape

This is where the strategic interplay touches on the core of my work. The Intelligence Gap™ It’s not about a lack of intelligence, knowledge, experience, or ambition. In fact, the women I work with usually have an abundance of all of those things. The gap arises when what you know, what you can do, and what you’ve built up aren’t sufficiently translated into the position, influence, income, wealth, and freedom that could potentially result from them. The interplay of forces is one important manifestation of this.

You may possess exceptional expertise and yet still not fully understand where that expertise offers the greatest value. You may have a strong reputation but lack access to the places where decisions are made. You may have a good offering but position it toward the person experiencing the problem rather than the person who decides, pays, or grants access. In that case, the problem isn’t your intelligence. The problem lies in how you communicate it.

The question is no longer how much value you possess, but how well your system is able to connect that value to the context in which it can yield results.

And that is exactly what The Compound™ means to me. It’s the place where everything comes together, where the collective intelligence system amplifies the combined impact and influence of female leaders and entrepreneurs, and where value is transformed into growth in personal, professional, and financial capital.

How does the compound effect arise when value, position, and environment reinforce one another?

Suppose you’re developing a new offering. The classic reflex is to spend months perfecting the content yourself, refining your method, setting your price, and then entering the market. But what if you first analyze the competitive landscape? What if you first reassess your position and present your value proposition to the right top-tier clients?

Because if you understand who is actually experiencing the problem, who bears the financial consequences, who controls the budget, who influences the decision, and what existing solutions are already available on the market, then a single insight can completely change your positioning.

Your offering becomes more relevant. Your message becomes more focused. You connect with different people. You attract different customers. You gain access to different markets. Your reputation grows within a more relevant environment. That reputation, in turn, creates new opportunities.

That's where the compound effect comes into play. Not because you're simply doing more, but because a single strategic move amplifies multiple forms of value.

Insight strengthens positioning > Positioning strengthens access > Access expands commercial opportunities > Commercial opportunities strengthen reputation > Reputation creates access once again. And when you are then able to sustain that value both commercially and financially, wealth is created.

That is Integral Growth Systems™ that works for you, even when you’re not there. Personal capital, business capital, financial capital, reputational capital, and relational capital are not separate from one another. Together, they form a system in which one form of value can reinforce another.

Why can a strong strategic environment enhance your intelligence?

This is a curious misconception—one that I’ve experienced myself and have also observed in other highly experienced and intelligent people. The more you know, the easier it becomes to think that you can handle things on your own and solve problems by yourself. After all, you’ve spent years learning to analyze complex situations and solve problems independently. You’ve become the one who takes responsibility, sees connections, and gets to the bottom of complex issues. But precisely because of that, you can become blind to information that lies outside your own perspective. You don’t see what you don’t see, because we all have our own ‘Dijk van Gelijk’ and therefore fail to see other perspectives and points of view.

Another entrepreneur might spot a business opportunity that you overlook because of your own involvement. Someone with different experience might point out a risk that you hadn’t considered. A strategic relationship can introduce you to someone you would never have met through your existing network. And sometimes, a single incisive question can help you look at a problem in a way you wouldn’t have discovered on your own. That’s not dependence—it’s leverage.

Collective intelligence enhances individual intelligence when the environment is strong enough to challenge your thinking, offer you new insights, and open new doors.

That’s why I don’t believe in environments that merely reinforce what you already know. For women who have achieved a great deal, admiration is rarely the greatest value an environment can offer. The right environment provides you with better questions, different perspectives, relevant connections, and sometimes exactly the challenge you need to make a strategic move that you wouldn’t make on your own.

How can you make better use of what you've already built?

If you continue to treat your knowledge, reputation, relationships, and commercial opportunities as separate entities, a significant portion of your potential value will remain untapped. You may have impressive expertise that isn’t positioned effectively for commercial gain. You may have a strong reputation that still doesn’t generate enough access. You may have a large network that contains hardly any strategic relationships. You may have a thriving business that still relies too heavily on your personal efforts.

In that case, the value isn't necessarily missing. The strategic link is missing. That’s exactly what I focus on as a strategic partner at The Compound™. Not how to add even more, but how to strategically connect the value that’s already there.

Because maybe you don’t need to pursue yet another degree. Maybe you need to reposition your existing expertise. Maybe you don’t need to meet even more people. Maybe you need to understand which relationships truly constitute strategic capital. Maybe you don’t need to work harder. Maybe your value needs access to a different, more powerful force field. And maybe that’s why your next step toward growth isn’t purely a new strategy, but a different way of looking at and reassessing everything you’ve already built up.

The Compound™ – Where value grows into capital.

Three questions worth asking

Which dynamics surrounding your next business or professional move do you currently not fully understand, and which people, interests, or information do you need to understand first before taking the next step?

What expertise, reputation, or relationships have you built up over the past few years that you still primarily use as part of your day-to-day work, even though they now represent much greater strategic value?

What would change if you looked not only at what you can create, but also at who can enhance, accelerate, finance, spread, or multiply your value?

The Compound™ GrowthScan shows you where your personal, professional, relational, and reputational capital stands today and where the greatest leverage lies for strategically linking these forms of value.

Not to add even more to your business, but to gain a clearer understanding of the value you’ve already built and where that value isn’t working well enough for you.

Take the scan at gerdihulsink.nl/scan

Have a great week,

Gerdi Hulsink

PS. The Compound –Scale to Freedom™ is my strategic partnership for women who no longer want to treat their expertise, reputation, relationships, and entrepreneurship as separate components, but rather want to grow them as a single, integrated system.
