Strategic repositioning and growth - are you ready?

You have already achieved so much in your career. During your study(s), your MSc, MBA, PhD or top position in business/your own company testifies to your intelligence and perseverance. But there is more to you. You're ready to take your impact to the next level. But how do you tackle that? Time for strategic repositioning.

First, ask yourself these crucial questions:

  • Are you still the right person in the right place?
  • Are you still doing what you are good at and energized by?
  • What does that give you now in time, energy, money, satisfaction and impact?

It's time to take a critical look at where you spend your time and energy. Who or what is sucking up your energy? Here are some steps to help you focus:

  1. Evaluate your environment
Make a list of the people you spend the most time with. Assess how they affect you. Do they give you energy or suck it away? Do you celebrate successes together or do they keep you small?
  2. Find the right partners, experts and advisors
Don't take business advice from someone who has not yet built the business you want. Surround yourself with people who have achieved what you aspire to.
  3. Take responsibility
Stop blaming others for your situation. Take back control by taking responsibility for your actions and reactions. Your life and future, lead it.
  4. Learn to say 'no'
Do you have clear goals and a clear vision? Use these as a filter for your decisions. Say "yes" to opportunities that align with your vision, and "no" to the rest.
  5. Stop comparing
Everyone starts from a different point. Focus on your own path and take full ownership and leadership of your life and choices.

1. Don't deal with energy guzzlers

Start by making your energy list. A list of the people you spend the most time with. Then evaluate everyone based on how they influence you:

  • Do they make you feel good or bad about yourself?
  • Do they celebrate your victories with you or make you feel guilty for winning?
  • Do they want more for you or are they keeping you at their level?

Give more of your time to people who uplift you, support you in good times and bad, who grant you the successes and celebrate with you.

Give less of your time to people who want more from you, only want to benefit from it themselves, and who bring you down.

2. Don't take advice from people who haven't done it

Don't take business advice from someone who hasn't yet built the business you want. Surround yourself with people who have what you want. Go to them, reach out and connect with them. Be the student and not afraid to ask questions.

3. Don't blame anything for your situation

When you blame something else for your own failure, you lose control of the situation. More often than not, I blamed others for my bad situation, failed attempt or mistakes. But that only took power out of my hands. When you take responsibility, you regain control to become better.

You are not always in control of what happens to you and what happens to you, but you can control how you react. Perspective is important. We are not creatures of circumstances. We are creators of circumstances. Take responsibility for everything that happens, including what you do and create. That gives you the power to change it and make it true.

4. Say "No" more often.

"Sometimes, the most productive thing you can do is to say no."

  • Steve Jobs

The main reason people still get this wrong? They lack clarity about their goals and vision.

Having a vision with clear goals creates a filter for making "Yes" or "No" decisions. If the opportunity aligns with your vision, say "Yes. If it does not align, say "No.

Saying "No" more often ensures that you don't waste your time and energy and continue to spend it on the things and people that matter.

5. Don't compare yourself to others

Everyone has different starting conditions and circumstances when they start their own business:

  • Some people start with money, others start when they are broke.
  • Some people start out healthy, others unhealthy.
  • Some people grew up with entrepreneurs, others did not.

No two people start from exactly the same point. Therefore, there is only ONE like you. Stop comparing and focus on your own life, your own business and your own future.

Your situation and your results are all a reflection of the choices you have made and will make. Once you take full ownership of your own life, everything changes.

Now that you have laid this foundation, it is time to strategically reposition yourself. To do this, I have developed a framework based on my own strategic (re)positioning and that can help you with your (re)positioning and growth.

Framework: Strategic positioning in times of change and growth

When you are ready to take your impact to the next level in a different way. To live your life and your successful business on your terms? Not just dreaming of that beautiful life and successful business in the future, but taking the step now to start making that change and realizing your dreams.

From dream to reality

Create your own strategy and continue your path to unlimited growth and success.

strategic repositioning

1. Reset and reorientation

  • Dare to let go of what is there now and look forward to what is to come. Let go of what is holding you back, including old beliefs and the (false) certainties from your corporate career.
  • Strengthen and enrich your network. Surround yourself with like-minded people who uplift and inspire you.
  • Gather all the insights you need to make conscious choices, using your analytical skills.

2. Your unique blueprint - your Legacy

  • Define the essence of your life, what is it you are here to do, what is your contribution to the greater good? What impact do you want to make with your years of expertise, your qualities and your value? What do you want to pass on to others and leave behind in your life?
  • Visualize your version of your greatness and success - what does your ideal life and successful career look like?
  • Define your non-negotiables - what values are essential in your leadership and entrepreneurship?

3. Strategic (re)positioning

  • Know your potential, your value strengths ánd your growth opportunities, using your years of experience
  • Identify the golden opportunities in the marketplace where your unique expertise can make a difference, how to leverage and multiply your potential and value in a different way
  • Create a razor-sharp analysis based on your in-depth knowledge of:

4. Focus on your priorities

  • Strengthen your unique position through your incomparable value proposition with your specific expertise and value
  • Set clear long-term and short-term goals that align with your ambition and vision
  • Create an action plan that resonates with your high-value top customers, clients and collaborative partners (network)

5. Your strategic growth plan

  • Create a simple strategic plan as your compass, using your strategic thinking skills
  • Distill this into a one-pager for daily focus and quick decision-making.
  • I myself use a long-term yearly plan, which I divide into an annual plan (my one-pager), quarterly and monthly plan. No bookwork, just a simplified and clear plan to keep my focus and be able to adjust/adjust immediately.

6. From plan to execution

  • Make sure everyone on your team (or freelancers/or your network partners) understand the forward-looking plan
  • Maintain an overview, make timely adjustments and take responsibility as a strategic leader using your leadership skills
  • Provide the right resources and support, including attracting top talent (and this really is an essential component every time you want/can scale up again)

7. Do and carry on

  • Make it concrete: who does what and when with what result? Delegate effectively where necessary and also let go.
  • Develop a scorecard to measure progression
  • Create SOPs (Standard Operations Procedures), checklists/systems and frameworks for unified and focused execution to results.

8. Accountability and growth

  • Monitor your progress with regular check-ins, stay focused on results. Reflect every week, month, quarter and year. I then apply the Framework: More, Better, New: What is working and can I do more? What can be done better? And (on a quarterly basis and not more often is my advice, because then you lose focus #shinny-object-syndrom) what am I going to innovate and renew?
  • Hold strategic analysis sessions to stay on course and adjust, using your expertise. As well as help from other experts, coaches, mentors who keep you on your toes and allow you to see new perspectives, opportunities and growth possibilities that you didn't envision yourself. For me, this is the reason why I always allow myself to be helped to take advantage of new opportunities for growth and to grow in an accelerated and focused way.
  • Celebrate your successes and learn from your challenges, continue to continually develop and grow personally, professionally and financially.

This framework helps you leverage your unique expertise, potential and value to make a real difference. It is not about perfection, but about growth and impact.
