There comes a point when you realize you don't want to do more. You want to build differently.

This week, a successful woman called me. She had everything she thought she wanted: a well-run practice, waiting lists full of clients, financial security. But she felt trapped in her own success. She missed her freedom and another way to live her life and, above all, be meaningful in her own way. Less lived and rushed, but finally from peace, enrichment and freedom. Freedom not only visible in her bank account, but palpable in her body, her business and legacy.

The difference between building and living

Most entrepreneurs build a business. They build a proliferation of offerings, piling systems upon systems, strategies upon strategies until they have an impressive structure that works perfectly on paper. From work/life balance to life/work integration 

When I left my corporate career in 2020, I thought I was going to build a business. What I was actually doing was rebuilding my life. My work, my values, my well-being. Really everything came together into one integrated whole.

That's what I see now in the women leaders and entrepreneurs I work with. They no longer have their leadership fragmented across different life domains. They have created a system that does make sense. A higher standard that fits them and doesn't (under)pressure them.

Most systems are designed by and for a world in which success is linear. This is true in education, but also in the business world. In which you have to score, get points and more is always better. In which life and work are separate domains that you must "balance. 

I don't believe in work/life balance. When is it balanced? To me, this feels like constantly fighting to keep both in balance.

I am going for Life/Work integration: cyclical, intuitive, holistic. It calls for integration, not segregation. For flow, not force.

Because when you continue to squeeze yourself into systems that are not designed for you, you pay a price:

Many of us have been raised with the idea that success lies primarily in getting bigger, harder and more. It comes about when you stop adding things and start tuning in: to who you are, what you want, what is really right for you.

Most of the women I talk to have gains, but no real freedom. They are trapped in their own success.
