The Intelligence Gap™

The invisible gap that keeps intelligent women in business and leadership small

There comes a time when you can no longer pretend you don't feel it. Because you've been feeling it for a while. There is more in you and there is more to life. It bubbles, it pushes, it causes intrinsic turmoil and dissatisfaction. You've been suppressing the feeling for years because actually you feel you have nothing to complain about right? Good career, good salary, nice house and car in the driveway.

NOW it is just no longer deniable, because it starts to chafe and irritate you more and more. You know that you are at a tipping point, that you are greater than the role you are playing now, that there is a different standard waiting for you than the standard the old system has enabled you to reach so far. You know that you are beyond the behavior you are showing. That you have arrived somewhere, stalled in a position and environment that you no longer fit into. And you feel that this is not a phase. This is a tipping point where your identity, your intelligence and your inner truth no longer allow themselves to be tamed.

Yet it doesn't come out fully yet. Not because you don't dare. Not because you don't know how. But because a gap has opened up between the woman you have long been internally and the woman you have had to become externally to function, to survive, to excel in a system not designed for you. That gap is The Intelligence Gap™. It is not an abstract idea, not a spiritual metaphor, not a mindset exercise. It is a systemic reality.

Stop losing yourself in a system that is no longer built for you

That gap not only feels like doubt, it feels like loss. Not just of undervalued opportunity or income, but of something much more fundamental, the loss of yourself. Of the woman you have long been, but which you have so far suppressed, interrupted to remain acceptable.

The golden cage of your potential

Last month at a business event, I spoke to a senior consultant/advisor who had everything you expect of success. On the outside it looked perfect, but she didn't feel that way. She may have become self-employed for her need for autonomy and freedom, but as a consultant she felt she still had to hold back and conform to the system, the culture of the companies she worked for. As if she constantly had to keep herself small to fit into a system that was no longer made for her.

This is the Golden Cage I often talk about. Life looks good on the outside, but on the inside you feel how limiting it is. A cage built by beliefs that don't even belong to you:

The belief that you must remain humble. Because ‘self-importance doesn't stand’ and ‘just act normal, you'll be crazy enough.’

The belief that you have to follow the rules. Because ‘that's the way it should be’ and ‘that's the standard’ and ‘everyone does it that way.’

The belief that you have to adapt to a system that was never made for you. Because otherwise you are ‘difficult’ or ‘too demanding’ or ‘not team-oriented.’

And so a pattern emerges that you only later realize how costly it has been. How much it has cost you that you have been too quick, too smart, too modest, too cautious, too loyal, too much on expectations of others. How many times have you interrupted, restrained, put yourself in perspective, conformed to the standard? Not always because you had to. But because it was rewarded.

The ‘old’ system rewards you for adaptation. Not for autonomy, authority and freedom of doing things your own way.

And that is exactly why so many intelligent women (including men I talk to and work with, by the way!) undervalue themselves.

The gap that bounds you to grow

The Intelligence Gap™ is my new method that I have developed and use in my collaborations. The Intelligence Gap is the space between who you really are and what you dare to show. It is the gap between:

  • Your potential and your position
  • Your internal truth and your external appearance
  • Your self-knowledge and your visibility
  • Your value and your appreciation

And women pay the price for this every day: loss of energy, loss of influence, loss of gain, loss of satisfaction. But the most important loss is this: the loss of self.

Beyond the gap, anything is possible

What I myself have experienced, as have many talented and intelligent women with me, is an internal tension that grows stronger with each passing year. You feel that you have landed somewhere you no longer fit in. You are no longer the right person in the right place. You don't need yet another education or yet another certificate or yet another outside validation. That's not the problem.

What you need is something else:

  • Space to claim your authority
  • Distance and saying goodbye to what is no longer right
  • Ownership of your position
  • Freedom to lead as you see fit, making impact in your own way

You don't need external growth. You need internal liberation. Because as long as the gap remains between who you really are and what you dare to bring out, you will still remain invisible in the places where you have something to say, undervalued in the places where you deliver value, unused in the places where you can make an impact.

The Intelligence Gap is not a mindset problem, a motivation problem, a self-confidence problem or a time problem. It's a systemic problem. And it requires a systemic solution.

Why the ‘old’ systems aren't going to take you any further

The old model of leadership is linear, rational, external and still male-conditioned and dominated. It steers by KPIs, structure, hierarchy and predictability. It forces women into patterns that are at odds with how they naturally lead. Especially when we enter new phases of life and changes occur on a systemic (and hormonal ... yep I know) level.

The old model asks that you:

  • Your mind overrules
  • Putting your limits into perspective
  • Pushing your feelings away
  • Ignoring your inner compass

And as a result, it leads to four destructive patterns in women with great potential:

The four triggers that (unconsciously) engage you and keep you small

1. Over-intellectualizing instead of leading
You keep analyzing, researching, weighing. You wait until you are 100% sure. You look for more evidence before you take a stand. I did it and see this in other women with twenty years of experience who still hesitate whether they can claim something. Who start their sentences with ‘In my opinion...’ or ‘Maybe...’ while being the expert in the room.

2. Imposter tremors instead of authority
Deep down, you feel you ‘haven't quite got it yet. That others can do it better. That you've been lucky. That you will be exposed and caught. These imposter tremors are not personal. They are systematically learned. Because we are taught from a young age that self-confidence is arrogance. That claiming is hubris. That modesty is a virtue.

3. Conditioning rather than ownership
You learned to adapt, seek consensus, serve your team, above all be available and remain flexible. These traits were rewarded in the corporate appraisal system. But what I didn't see then and see clearly now: they keep you small as a professional, entrepreneur and leader. Because adaptation is the opposite of leadership.

4. Perfectionism loops rather than executes
It has to be perfect before you launch it. It has to be finished before you show it. It has to be polished before you dare to share it. And so you keep refining, improving, honing. Whereas by half, men are already three steps ahead. These patterns have nothing to do with personal failure. They are learned, but they are no longer sustainable.

The Intelligence Gap™ Framework : From Potential to Position

In my new The Leadership Intelligent Institute and my The Art of Intelligent Leadership (more on that next week 😊) I explain the full framework. Closing The Intelligence Gap is not a three-step plan. It is a systemic transformation, a movement.

Phase 1: Gap Analysis™.

You are going to see where you are still living, working or leading below your worth. Not because you can't, but because you are still operating on systems not designed for you.

Once you see this gap, you can't un-see it. And that is exactly the point where you see new perspectives and the space for growth arises.

Phase 2: Gap Closing™

You align choices, routines/rhythm, communication and strategy with your authority. You no longer act from ‘should’ but from who you are. Your growth accelerates through decisiveness, positioning and value creation.

Not because you learned new skills. But because you closed the gap between who you already are and what you dare to claim.

 Phase 3: Gap Leading™

You become the woman who no longer responds to the system, but rewrites the system and your own story. You no longer go for participation, but for influence. No longer for growth purely in money, but for direction, space and impact-driven results. No longer for visibility, but for authority. Being seen, heard and appreciated for who you are, what you have to offer and the impact you realize. And exactly in that you are the role model, the forerunner for other women and the younger generations to follow and who desperately need it.

the intelligence gap

You always have a choice. Keep doing what you always do or you take the plunge and cross the chasm. Whatever you choose, it's really entirely up to you. Your life, you decide. It does get you totally different outcomes:

Option 1: You wait and keep your current standard

Let's be honest about what it costs if you do nothing. You are subsidizing the old system with your potential. Every day you work below your value, you pay a price:

  • Fulfillment you miss: Living from your true authority rather than modified role
  • Impact that remains: Turning your vision into measurable change instead of hitching a ride on someone else's agenda
  • Financial freedom that fails to materialize: Claiming your full value and profit instead of negotiating from humility. Often paying according to the hours you invest rather than the value and impact you realize.
  • Direction you cede: Complete control over your career and future instead of waiting to see what the system allows
  • And perhaps the most painful: the example you are not for the next generation of women. Because every time you keep yourself small, you teach other women that they should do the same. Every time you adapt, you strengthen the system that needs change.

Option 2: You take action and start growing profitably

  • You win back your energy. Because you stop correcting yourself and keeping yourself small.
  • You win back your influence. Because you speak, decide and lead from within. You no longer take the floor with ‘Maybe this is a stupid idea, but...’ You take the floor.
  • You win back your space. Because you choose without explanation, without doubt, without noise. You no longer have to justify why you say no or say yes. Your authority is enough.
  • You win back your value. Because you negotiate, position and act from authority. Your prices are no longer ‘what the market can handle’ but what your transformation is worth.
  • You win back your future. Because you no longer depend on what the system throws at you. You create your own rules of the game.
  • You win yourself back. And that is the greatest capital you will ever have.

  • You seek a quick fix rather than systemic transformation
  • You have less than 5 years of work experience in leadership roles or in your own business

The start of new life and leadership

It is time to close the gap that has kept you small. It is time to claim the position that has been waiting for you for years. It is time to become visible in the way that is true to who you are. It's time to become the example you yourself have not had. Time to stop subsidizing your potential to a system that was never built for you.
