Why too much choice stops your growth

You've built a successful career and thriving business, but somewhere in the process you've lost the essence of why you started. The hidden saboteur of your success

In conversations with the women within ELLLE Scale to Freedom, during online conversations as well as in the DM on LinkedIn, I keep hearing the same pattern. Women with impressive careers, strong profiles and impressive expertise get stuck at a point where they know they have to choose differently, but don't dare, can't or don't know how. They remain stuck in what once got them where they are today, even though they feel it no longer makes sense. They keep all options open, while their energy leaks away in the process of weighing up.

What looks from the outside like deliberate professionalism is in reality often procrastination. Not out of weakness, but out of the illusion that there will be another better time, a better certainty or a better input. The truth is that waiting for perfect information is a form of self-protection that is ultimately paralyzing.

The answer lies in a psychological phenomenon called decision fatigue. When we present people with too many options, their brains become overloaded with the cognitive effort required to evaluate all the possibilities. The paradoxical result is that they often choose no option rather than risk making the wrong choice.

I often compare it to my own experience at a restaurant with a ten-page menu versus that intimate bistro where you can choose from eight carefully chosen dishes. Where do you order faster and with more confidence? 

As visionary women, we have a natural tendency to then just do more, gain new knowledge and want to help everyone. We think from abundance of doing more and therefore create multiple pathways to the desired transformation. But what we unintentionally do is abandon our ideals with analysis paralysis.

More choices lead to fewer decisions

What many successful women fail to realize is that not deciding is also deciding. Doubting is like waiting in a waiting room without knowing what you are waiting for. Every day you procrastinate, every week you keep analyzing without acting, costs you more than you realize.

They call it choice stress. But in reality, it is a creeping paralysis that masquerades as overthinking. What once began as a clear vision and a powerful drive has slowly morphed into a web of possibilities you've become entangled in. You've built a solid reputation, a thriving business, good income and a network of value. And yet it feels like you are standing still.

This stagnation is not due to lack, but it has come about because of abundance. An abundance of scenarios, opportunities, projects, opinions, models, directions. The challenge you felt and the freedom you were looking for when you started has been imperceptibly exchanged for an overflowing head and an overloaded agenda. You live (worse....be lived), but no longer lead from clarity. You work, but no longer from direction but from the ingrained routine.

Energetically, you pay a higher price. For you are running on empty, feeling lack of challenge and keeping yourself trapped in the golden cage and your self-built rat race. And yet you don't choose or make the decision to do things differently. And those unfinished decisions continue to occupy your mental space, sucking away energy you could be using for new creation and growth. That constant state of "I have yet to decide on..." becomes a chronic form of stress that undermines your creativity and spontaneity.

But perhaps the greatest cost, is to your self-confidence. Every time you delay a decision, you weaken your own belief in your ability to choose. You begin to see yourself as someone who doubts rather than someone who leads. This has a spiraling effect that extends to all areas of your life.

The choice to change

Recently, I worked with a smart woman within ELLLE Scale to Freedom who had stepped right into the spiral effect. She had built a consulting business over years that was successful on paper with solid revenue, respected clients and collaborative teams that admired her. But beneath the surface was doubt, and when we dug deeper, we discovered that her entire proposition was based on what her clients expected, not what energized her or produced profitable growth. She was not building what she really wanted.

For years she had put off strategic choices because every change carried risks. Should she specialize, raise her prices and risk losing new business? Should she get rid of the hourly-billing model, even though that was her only known way of making money?

Only when she dared to opt for focus, direction and clear positioning instead of eternal availability did room for new movement emerge. She let go of the hourly-billing model, redesigned her offering and increased her rates. Not from a rational plan, but from a renewed confidence in her value. The breakthrough came not because everything was certain, but because she decided she no longer wanted to put herself off.

The result was huge. In 20% less time (from working 5 to 4 days) and an 180% increase in her sales. But more importantly top clients who appreciated her work, whom she energized and got the best results with. Higher sales with less effort. More time for strategic thinking and less time spent on operational details. But most importantly the return of her enjoyment of her work and pride in what she created.

It only comes when they dare to choose, eliminate and rebuild from their essence. They start leading again from what is right for them. Making their company lighter, more strategic and challenging again. Back in action with focus and a clear strategy. Then the growth that is not only visible in turnover, but is tangible in new impact and satisfaction is created.
