Why intelligent women work harder than they need to and yet remain below their strategic potential

When intelligence no longer makes a difference

You're smart, experienced and you deliver results time and time again. And yet, your work feels increasingly disproportionate to your true potential. That feeling has a name: The Intelligence Gap™.

Why is it so persistent and how you can break it with help From Integral Growth Systems™.

Intelligence alone does not create strategic freedom. It requires a different system.

Many intelligent women find themselves at a point in their life careers where something fundamental begins to teeter. They have completed their degree(s), accumulated years of experience and proven themselves in complex roles or responsibilities. THEY carry a lot, both at home and at work. They have learned to stay strong, put their shoulders to the wheel and keep going.

And then gradually, many of these smart women experience a subtle but growing tension.

Because despite their intelligence and commitment, the feeling remains that their work is no longer commensurate with their potential, impact and freedom.

This is the moment when what I ‘The ’Intelligence Gap™' mention becomes visible.

How does The Intelligence Gap™ arise?

Many educated women have been taught that working harder and performing better leads to advancement. And in the early stages of a career, this is true. But at some level, the rule of the game changes.

Growth and influence no longer depend on how much you do, but on how you structure your position, your systems and your value proposition.

Those who don't see that will continue to work from execution. And no matter how good you are at execution, it does not create freedom.

The Intelligence Gap occurs when highly educated, intelligent women continue to work within structures, roles and systems that make their work primarily reactive. Their intelligence is used to solve problems, manage processes and keep systems running.

But your intelligence (EQ x IQ) alone does not create strategic freedom. And certainly no satisfaction when it is undervalued and not fully utilized. Not because you lack talent, but because your intelligence is deployed in a system that limits and restricts your development and growth.

Why your intelligence won't get you anywhere and what it does take

Somewhere in recent months, or perhaps for some time, a feeling has crept in that is hard to name. Not dissatisfaction. Not burnout. Not even self-doubt. Although the situation you're in right now doesn't make you any more certain. Sometimes you think you're the only one suffering from this, don't experience the safety of talking about it with colleagues or other people close by. After all, you have it good, right?

Yet, this is more subtle and gets to the core of who you are and what you are really here to do. It is the feeling that you work hard, do a good job, take responsibility, but that the result is no longer commensurate with what you put into it. That you are busy, but no longer really builds. In any case, not building what you want to bequeath and the legacy you want to build.

If I'm honest, I know this feeling inside out.

The moment I realized I had to redesign my role

After twenty years of corporate business, I saw what was really going on. In my own career, at one point I knew exactly how systems worked and the political game that was played strategically.... How organizations functioned behind the scenes, how decisions were made, where the real power lay and where the illusion of power was created.

But that insight also showed me something else. The intelligent women who worked hard and did a lot were rarely in the positions that mattered most. Not because they were less capable, but because their intelligence was deployed in systems that employed them rather than carried them. I call that The Intelligence Gap™.

The Intelligence Gap™ occurs the moment intelligence and commitment no longer lead to strategic freedom, but only to more work without the appreciation.

This is not a personal failure. It is a structure problem, and that requires a systemic change. Because structure problems are not solved by working harder or planning better.

What's really on your calendar and what you focus on says more than you think

One of the first things I do when I start working with someone is to analyze her agenda and her established routines both private and business. Not the agenda she wants to have. But her filled agenda for the past three months.

When I see that agenda filled with alignment, consultation to consultation, problem solving, reactive work, I know one thing for sure, that there is not yet an integral system that carries freedom and growth on a personal, business and financial level.

And that's exactly why your work never feels truly completed. Why more always shoves onto your plate and you make it happen (taking on too much and saying no too little). Why strategic thinking has become something you hope to do, in the evenings, in between busyness. And that your own time dramatically slips in and you also don't allow yourself the time to loaf, exercise and do other fun social things.

This is not a matter of discipline. It is a matter of redesign. A new standard and new routines based on your lifestyle business model. Like redesigning from your life and, in addition, how you want to fulfill your ambitions in business.

Growth that doesn't have to be borne by you

What most leaders and entrepreneurs try to do when things get stuck, they want to work more efficiently with better tools, more structure and e.g. block one day a week for external appointments.

And I understand the logic, but it doesn't get to the point.

Because as long as you are the center of your work, the person without whom decisions are not made, projects do not land, processes do not run, then there will always be too much on you. You will continue to carry and do everything all by yourself because you have set up the system around you so that it depends on you.

That's why I work with Integral Growth Systems™.

Not a framework that gives you even more tasks. But a way of building where strategy, structure and collaboration are so aligned that growth is carried and increased by the system, without your constant presence.

When that is properly and integrally aligned and reinforced through the compound effect, your role changes fundamentally. You are no longer the one who solves everything. You are the one who determines where the system grows, where you invest and reinvest to grow again.

Ambition without a system to carry it is not a strategy. It is endurance.

Indeed, many high potentials and leaders are judged not on the value they create, but on their ability to absorb work, manage processes and solve problems. That seems efficient, but in the long run it creates a form of strategic downtime. And if you don't take good care of yourself and it takes more of your time and energy than it gives you, then even a decline, a downward spiral.

When I decided to build my own business, it became clear to me that if I really wanted to create impact, profit and freedom, I didn't just have to change my work. But rather, I had to change my position and the system in which in live and within which my work takes place. To make clear choices about how I wanted to invest my time, energy and money so that I could continue to grow personally, professionally and financially in the future.

There begins what I call building Integral Growth Systems™.

Unlike many leadership programs and instead of focusing on developing only your personal or business leadership this approach focuses on designing the total of 3 leadership systems: Personal, Business and Financial Leadership.

The real question is not how to do more, but what is your intelligence really being used for?

Are you carrying complexity or building something? Are you building ‘for’ a company, someone else's impact or are you building your own assets and legacy? Are you solving other people's problems or creating your own value? Are you a performer or an architect of your own growth?

For many women I counsel, this is confronting and I notice initial resistance. Not because they don't know the answer, but because they know the answer has to be different than it is now. That's when the work begins.

To analyze and redesign your position, your proposition and the processes you have built. Not to overload you with new tasks, but to see Where the system gets in your way And how to change that.

The result is not a busier schedule. It's more space, more direction. And work that is finally commensurate with your worth.

Freedom is not a reward at the end of hard work. It is a design choice.

I see it again and again in the women who work with me. They are not tired because they are weak. They are tired because they are carrying a system that was never designed to carry them that way. They are no longer the right person in the right place. They are no longer spending their time and energy on those things and people that matter and where they are truly meaningful and making an impact.

And you can change that. Not by stopping, but by redesigning.

Health, growth and freedom can exist simultaneously. But only when your systems, your positioning, your processes, your role are designed to complement rather than deplete your time and energy. When you take an honest look at where your energy goes, you often discover that much of your work contributes little to your strategic position, your influence or your freedom.

That's what I call Integral Growth Systems™. And that's exactly what we're building together.

You don't have to be less ambitious to live more freely. You just need a different architecture.

Ready to stop compensating and start building? If you recognize what I describe here felt like a mirror than an article, then it's time for a conversation.

Not a no-obligation introductory meeting. But a Strategic Insight Discussion of 30 minutes in which we look together at where you are currently lacking direction and growth, and what your first step is toward true strategic freedom.

Not by working harder. But by redesigning your leadership with clear systems, strategic positioning and a structure that supports growth.

Personal.
Business.
Financial.

Because real freedom does not come from working less. Real freedom comes when your intelligence finally works in a system that supports rather than limits your growth.

One Life. Lead it. Live it.

Warm regards,

Gerdi Hulsink

Frequently asked questions about The Intelligence Gap™ and strategic freedom

What is The Intelligence Gap™?

The Intelligence Gap™ is the moment when intelligence and commitment no longer lead to growth, impact or freedom. It occurs when a leader or entrepreneur continues to work within systems that use her intelligence for execution, rather than strategy.

This is not the result of a lack of talent or ambition. It is the result of a system that uses intelligent women for execution and operational fireworks, rather than for strategy and sustainable value.

For whom is this relevant?

For highly educated women in senior corporate roles or as entrepreneurs who find that their work is no longer commensurate with their potential, value or freedom.

What are Integral Growth Systems™?

Integral Growth Systems™ are strategically designed systems that structurally support growth, impact and collaboration without depending on constant effort and your presence. These systems help you grow as leaders on a personal, business and financial level to shift from executor to architect of growth and freedom. Integrally so grow forward-looking in all areas.

How do I close The Intelligence Gap™?

By consciously redesigning your position, proposition and processes. Not by working harder, but by creating clarity about what really has value and building systems that carry that value.

What is the 7P Framework for Strategic Leadership and Growth?

The 7P Framework is a strategic model with seven interdependent pillars that help leaders design their work so that strategy, structure and processes are aligned. The result: more impact, less noise and a stronger position in the organization or your own company.

How long does it take to build an Integral Growth System?

It depends on your essence, ambitions, the complexity of your situation and the depth of the transformation. In the Scale to Freedom, we work together for six months on an integral transformation from operational to strategic leadership on a personal, business and financial level.

Does this approach also work for scale-ups, SMEs and corporates, not just entrepreneurs?

Yes. The Intelligence Gap™ plays out in large organizations as well as scale-up, SME and independent businesses. Leaders in corporate environments recognize the pattern just as keenly: lots of work but also the lack of new opportunities, challenges, lack of appreciation and satisfaction as well as little strategic freedom to contribute to the bigger picture at potential value.
