Why women leaders lose their compass in success and how to regain it through inner guidance
The paradox of success
She had achieved everything she ever dreamed of. A profitable business, a strong team, a visible brand. Yet she looked at me with a blank stare when I asked, ‘What are you really driving at?’
Her gaze stiffened, and after a few seconds she said she had to confess that she was steering for what others think of her.
From the outside, the world sees success growth. But inside her whoops of turmoil and lurks doubt. The cause is not lack of ambition but another cause, namely that external validation had become her invisible driver over her decisions, time and energy.
The ‘old’ system of external attachment
From an early age, our success is made measurable. We compare ourselves in education(s), promotions, income, new steps, sales and also online in reach, followers, likes. This seems rational, but is in fact deeply neurologically conditioned. We have become sort of addicted to external comparison and confirmation of our success. The brain is addicted to short, quick shots of dopamine that occur when we get the confirmation. Every time you receive a compliment, a client says ‘yes,’ or a post goes viral, your brain reinforces the path. With the result mostly that you want more of this and start doing it again and again. Because this feels so good right?
As a scientist myself, I also delve into neuromarketing, which this the Social Reward Loop mentions. Evolutionarily, this mechanism helped group acceptance and survival. But now it is a new form of mental dependence on affirmation.
Because when you allow yourself to be distracted (mislead I think it's more like it) by external signals, rather than by your own direction, it means three things in your business:
- Choices that are primarily socially desirable and not strategic.
- Target visibility rather than meaning.
- Growth driven by affirmation rather than direction.
The first step to freedom is to recognize this reward loop. Once you know how the incentive works, you can reverse it and begin to direct and celebrate your own success.
The price of external control
When your course is determined by external signals, a strategy of adaptation emerges. This is debilitating and costs you more than it gives you. You live in a constant feedback loop in which every decision is tested for approval. As a result, your boundaries blur, your confidence wanes and your time and energy are used up.
This pattern creates a form of inner exhaustion. Your brain is constantly scanning for approval, an invisible form of stress that undermines your focus, creativity and leadership quality. You function, but you no longer lead. Ownership and direction slip out of your hands. The result is inner turmoil, less creative space and indecision at crucial moments.
The shift from value proof to value driven
All the leaders I intensively mentor, CEOs, founders, entrepreneurs, sooner or later make the same choice. They stop proving their value and start embodying their value. That shift is not mystical but methodical and systemic.
The turnaround requires three concrete changes:
- Awareness of your dependencies. Recognize exactly what signals are sending you and why.
- A new definition of success. Define success based on essence: your values, your vision and what you are willing to protect.
- Mental retraining. Replace external rewards with internal rewards. Learn to feel pride without an audience.
These steps are neuroplasticity-based. Neuroplasticity means forming new pathways through repeated, conscious action. It's not floating, it's investing in mental health and leadership skills. They decide to stop ‘proving their worth’ and begin to stand for their worth.
Strategic leadership with internal navigation
Leaders who work from internal navigation think system level, not symptom level. They act from integrity and long-term impact, not impulse and short-term validation. This produces three measurable effects:
- Less stress and more focus.
- Faster and purer decisions.
- Attract ideal clients who resonate with your vision rather than your urgency.
Strategy becomes the extension of self-knowledge, ven leadership and growth. Your positioning becomes clearer because it no longer serves ‘seeing and being seen’ but meaning. Your marketing sticks because you communicate from your core. That increases your value and credibility to your high-value customers. Everything adds up and reinforces each other.
